Patients admitted to the Institut are transferred to one of 15 care units that provide care and treatment programs specific to the individual's condition.

As an ultraspecialized and tertiary care facility, the Institut takes patients from institutions all over Quebec:

  • From the health care network, such as psychiatric and general hospitals
  • From rehabilitation centres
  • From custody facilities: prevention centres, the Quebec courts, criminal and penal courts, detention centres and Quebec penitentiaries, youth services centres
  • From halfway houses, group homes or other external resources

Occasionally, patients are referred to the Institut from outside Quebec by institutions that do not have the highly specialized services or necessary security supervision to evaluate and treat very difficult cases.

Certain programs are offered through inpatient services and others are provided by Outpatient Services.
