Mental Illnesses

A loss of balance

Mental illnesses can take many forms and comprise a large number of disorders, such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, personality disorders, eating disorders, and organic mental disorders. In general, severe mental illnesses manifest in phases and, as symptoms can sometimes disappear, the person suffering from the illness may experience a normal life between acute phases.

Becoming informed

As multiple sources of information are available, we invite you to consult the most recent publication from the Public Health Agency of Canada entitled The Human Face of Mental Health and Mental Illness in Canada 2006. We have used the report's main points to summarize the principal diagnoses of patients admitted to the Institut Philippe-Pinel de Montréal.

Diagnoses upon admission

Patients hospitalized at the Institut Philippe-Pinel de Montréal suffer mainly from schizophrenia, mood and personality disorders or substance abuse disorders, and these mental illnesses are the ones most frequently diagnosed upon admission.
