About the Centre

The spirit of research

The Service de la recherche de l'Institut Philippe-Pinel de Montréal was established in the early 1970s, and over the years it developed into the current Centre de recherche de l'Institut Philippe-Pinel de Montréal (CRIPPM).

Forensic psychiatry

The CRIPPM has specialized in forensic psychiatry since its inception and currently comprises eleven researchers who have been integrated with the Centre de recherche Fernand-Séguin (CRFS) since 2003. The CRIPPM also acts as the forensic psychiatry axis of the CRFS. This close collaboration ensures complementary approaches and provides a critical mass of researchers with a wider network for exchange and mutual support.

Impulsivity

Researchers have observed that impulsivity is a constant factor in violent behaviour, drug addiction, gambling, among other problems. The CRIPPM therefore laid the foundations in 2004 for the creation of a Chair in Biology of Impulsivity. In its early stages, this project aims to unite specialists around the theme of impulsivity so that its mechanisms may be more clearly understood.

Innovations

The CRIPPM broke new ground in the fall of 2006 with the creation of the Cyberpsychology Laboratory. The Institut's cyberpsychology program is also a first in the assessment and treatment of sexual offending. Moreover, the expertise of the Statistical Consultation Group (SCG), notably in the fields of Crime Mapping and advanced statistics, has firmly established the Centre's reputation in these fields.

Influence

Researchers from the CRIPPM disseminate their work at major regional, national and international scientific symposia and conventions. They have also authored numerous publications ( articles, books, reports and abstracts).
